Fire Safety Team Leader

Location: Newport, South Wales
Salary: £46,716 per annum
Working Pattern: 3-4 days onsite

Are you an experienced fire safety professional looking for your next step into a leadership role?

We’re currently supporting a leading social housing organisation in Newport with the appointment of a Fire Safety Team Leader. This is an opportunity to take ownership of a specialist fire safety function, lead a team of eight technical professionals and play a key role in ensuring residents and properties remain safe and compliant.

You’ll lead a team of 4 Fire Safety Technicians and four Fire Safety Electrical Engineers, while working closely with the Fire Safety Manager and wider property teams.

Alongside the team leadership responsibility, you’ll oversee an annual fire safety budget of approximately £600,000, manage key compliance programmes and deputise for the Fire Safety Manager when required.

The role

You’ll be responsible for ensuring fire safety compliance activity is well planned, effectively delivered and driven through to completion.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and managing a team of four Fire Safety Technicians and four Fire Safety Electrical Engineers.
  • Supporting the Fire Safety Manager in meeting statutory fire safety responsibilities as a landlord.
  • Managing an annual fire safety budget of approximately £600k and helping shape future budget requirements.
  • Deputising for the Fire Safety Manager during periods of absence.
  • Managing the organisation’s Fire Risk Assessment programme and ensuring assessments are completed within required timescales.
  • Reviewing Fire Risk Assessments, validating significant findings and allocating remedial actions.
  • Managing and monitoring fire safety remedial works through to completion.
  • Escalating complex or overdue fire safety actions where required.
  • Ensuring FRA findings, actions and supporting documentation are accurately recorded.
  • Working with Fire Engineers where technical advice or supporting rationale is required.
  • Developing and managing a risk-based Fire Door inspection database and programme.
  • Overseeing fire door, emergency lighting, fire detection and alarm inspection programmes.
  • Producing accurate compliance and performance reports for senior management.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of fire strategies across the property portfolio.
  • Developing specifications for fire safety projects and providing technical assurance to wider property and development teams.
  • Managing consultants and contractors, including preparing briefs and specifications for procurement.
  • Project managing fire safety improvement projects and cyclical maintenance programmes.
  • Chairing contractor meetings and ensuring actions are clearly recorded, allocated and delivered.
  • Contributing to the development and improvement of fire safety policies, procedures and operational processes.
  • Managing compliance data and producing executive-level performance information.
  • Working collaboratively with internal teams, contractors and external stakeholders.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for an experienced fire safety professional who can combine strong technical knowledge with effective leadership and stakeholder management.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Experience working within social housing, local authority, housing, property or a similar environment.
  • Strong experience reviewing Fire Risk Assessments and managing remedial actions.
  • A good understanding of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
  • Experience managing fire safety compliance programmes.
  • Experience managing or leading a technical team.
  • Strong contractor and stakeholder management experience.
  • Excellent communication, influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Experience producing management and compliance reports.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and compliance/database systems.
  • Project management or quality assurance experience would be advantageous.

Qualifications

You’ll hold one or more relevant fire safety qualifications, such as:

  • NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety
  • Specialist Fire Prevention qualification
  • HNC/HND in Fire Safety Engineering or equivalent
  • Level 4 Certificate in Fire Safety Risk Assessment/Auditing or equivalent

A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle with business insurance is required.

This is a role for someone who wants to have genuine influence over fire safety delivery.

You’ll be leading a specialist team, managing a significant budget and overseeing some of the key programmes that underpin fire safety compliance across a housing portfolio.

It would suit an experienced Fire Safety Officer, Fire Safety Manager, Fire Safety Advisor, Fire Safety Team Leader or similar professional who is ready to take on greater responsibility and step into a broader leadership position.

If you’re looking for a role where you can combine technical fire safety expertise with team leadership, project delivery and strategic influence, we’d be keen to hear from you.
